To Moscow, our capital basketball players arrived in good mood. Bc Astana started the season in VTB United League with a victory over BC Triumph
On the eve of the match, head coach of BC Astana Matteo Boniciolli said that the game against CSKA Moscow will certainly be a good experience for the players and show the level of his team.
It was nice that the staff of the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Moscow came to support the Kazakhstani team, as well as the fans, students and Kazakh diaspora in Moscow.
Ball won by our basketball players, but the first attack was unsuccessful, so the next following attacks. Our players didn’t show their best game, and only 5 minutes into the game, David Simon got 2 points. BC Astana could not get many points, and as a result of one period was over with the score – 18:8 in favor of the hosts.
The second period started more active, the support of our fans helped, shouting out loud "Kazakhstan Alga!" Jerry Johnson started to show an excellent performance, but in the next attack, he landed badly and injured spine. For a few minutes referees had to stop the match.
Johnson was replaced by Latvian guard Janis Blooms. We should give credit to the guys, despite the loss of the player, no one was confused. The basketball players showed that without their leader they are able to play good. Janis Blooms showed that he’s capable to play good, and his three-pointers equalized the game with BC CSKA 22-22. Astana team was able to force the fight, and as a result – the first half of the game ended with a minimal difference in the score – 29-27 in favor of the army’s club.
After a long break guys kept the pace. Branko Cvetkovic got the three pointer. In response, the owners responded with a pair of points. Three-pointer hit by Dmitry Klimov equalized the game, 35-35. BC CSKA and their fans probably did not expect from the Kazakh team such a good game and team spirit. The third period ended with the score 45:44 in favor of the hosts.
Last ten minutes were difficult. Both teams were nervous, foul for a foul. But the hosts threw good three-pointers from Fridzon and Krstic, the difference in the score increased to 10 and the Astana team were not able to stop the opponent.
The match ended in favor of the defending champion of the VTB United League, BC CSKA – 72:54.
BC CSKA coach Ettore Messina.
– I think our players were unhappy with the performance in France and came to the floor today to do something good. But after a few blurry shots from the convenient position, they have lost faith in their own strength. But in the second half we started to play more patiently, have found the right "chemistry", a combination of players in the last quarter. Well protected and moved the ball, finding open positions. Obviously, BC Astana had a big loss of their leader point guard Johnson, but I think my team deserved to win, having done a lot of work. This proves statistics: our advantage in efficiency rating – 101:51.
Head coach of BC Astana Matteo Boniciolli:
– I am happy with how my team played for 35 minutes on an equal footing with the giants of European basketball. Here we are saddened with Jerry Johnson’s injury.
